Unlocking the Mystery of Meta Ads

Unlocking the Mystery : Why You're Seeing This Ad (And How to Take Control)

Ever wondered why a specific ad popped up in your feed? At Meta, they believe in transparency, and they actually want you to understand the reasons behind the ads you see. Our "Why am I seeing this ad?" feature gives you clear insights into the factors that influenced our system's decision to show you a particular ad, empowering you to shape your ad experience.

Here's how to unlock those insights:

Click in the top right corner of the ad.

Select "Why am I seeing this ad?" You'll see a breakdown of some of the key elements that may have played a role. For example, you might learn that you saw the ad because you recently visited the advertiser's website, or because the system has identified certain topics as relevant to you based on your activity.

If available, tap next to the reason why you're seeing an ad to view more information.

The Power of Machine Learning: Making Sense of It All

Behind "Why am I seeing this ad?" lies the power of sophisticated machine learning. These models, similar to those that deliver the ads themselves, analyze your activity both on and off Meta platforms to provide you with understandable explanations.

        They consider things like:

  •     Your engagement: Liking a post, clicking an ad, or interacting with content.
  •     Website and app activity: Information shared with us by advertisers about your activity on their sites and apps (this depends on your ad settings).

Factors That Shape Your Ad Experience

Here are some of the primary factors we use to determine which ads you see:

  •     Your Activity on Facebook: What pages you like, ads you click on, and content you engage with. If your Facebook and Instagram accounts are linked, your Instagram activity may also influence your ads on Facebook.
  •     Content You Create or Interact With: Posts, comments, shares, and other interactions across Facebook and Instagram.
  •     Information From Your Facebook Account: Details such as your age, gender, location, and the devices you use.
  •     Information Shared by Advertisers: Information such as your email address that advertisers, their partners, and our marketing partners share with us that they already have.
  •     Your Activity on Websites and Apps Off Facebook: (depending on your ad settings).
  •     *Important Note: "Why am I seeing this ad?" provides an explanation of some of the activity that we think may have influenced why our ads delivery system showed you this ad.

        META respect's your privacy:

  1.     They do not share information that personally identifies you (information such as your name or email address that by itself can be used to contact you or identifies who you are) unless you give us permission.
  2.     They do not use information with special protections that you choose to provide to show you ads.

Take Control: Customizing Your Ad Experience

META want's you to feel empowered to shape the ads you see. Here's how:

Adjust Your Ad Preferences: Visit your Ad Preferences page to manage your interests, profile information, and other settings for a more personalized experience.

Update Your Ads Based on Activity Information From Ad Partners: Choose whether we use information from your activity on websites and apps off Meta technologies to show you ads (in your ad settings).

Hide Ads From an Advertiser: If you find an advertiser uninteresting, you can hide individual ads or the entire advertiser.

NOTE:You can always manage your ad preferences in Accounts Centre.
