Making ads better and giving you more control on Facebook

Understanding Interest-Based Ads and How to Control Them

One thing I know at  Meta, strive to deliver ads that align with your interests, and they do this through a practice called online interest-based advertising

Many companies use this approach to connect you with products and services you'll find valuable. Here's how it works and, more importantly, how you can manage it.

How Interest-Based Advertising Works:

Think of it like this: Your online activity often signals your interests. We learn about these interests primarily in two ways:

Your Activity on Facebook: The Pages you like, the posts you engage with, and the comments you make provide valuable clues.

Your Activity on Other Websites and Apps: With your consent, we may also learn about your interests based on some of the websites and apps you use.

Example:

Imagine you're researching new TVs online and in mobile apps. Based on this activity, we might show you ads for:

Deals on TVs, helping you find the best price.

Other TV brands to consider, expanding your options.

Other electronics, like speakers or game consoles, that complement your new TV.

Your Privacy Matters: Opting Out of Interest-Based Advertising

Meta adheres to the principles established by leading advertising industry organizations like the Digital Advertising Alliance (DAA), European Interactive Digital Advertising Alliance (EDAA), and Digital Advertising Alliance of Canada (DAAC).

This means you have the power to control whether or not your information based on your activity on websites and apps outside of Facebook to show you ads.

Here's how to opt-out:

Meta Ad Settings: You can opt out directly within your Meta ad settings.

Digital Advertising Alliance: You can also opt out from all participating companies through the DAA (US), DAAC (Canada), or EDAA (Europe). Use the links below to visit their websites.

US: Digital Advertising Alliance

Canada: Digital Advertising Alliance of Canada

Europe: European Interactive Digital Advertising Alliance

Mobile Device Settings: Depending on your device, you may also have options to limit ad tracking in your mobile device settings.

Managing the Ads You See: Taking Control

Beyond opting out of interest-based advertising, you have even more control over the ads you see on Facebook through your Ad Preferences.

Accessing Your Ad Preferences:

You can access your ad preferences in two ways:

Ad Preferences Page: This is a dedicated page for managing your ad experience. To get there, click the down arrow ( ) in the top right corner of Facebook, select Settings & privacy > Settings. Then click Ads.

"Why Am I Seeing This Ad?" Tool: Every ad on Facebook has a "Why am I seeing this ad?" option. Accessing it this way takes you directly to information and settings relevant to that specific ad.

                        Key Settings to Manage:

Ad Topics: Found within the "Ad Preferences" page, this setting allows you to indicate that you want to see "less" of certain ad topics (e.g., electronics, fashion, travel).

Activity Information from Ad Partners: Found within "Ad Settings" in your Ad Preferences. If you have it turned on you can choose whether we use information based on your activity on websites or apps off Meta technologies for the purpose of showing you ads.

NOTE:By understanding how interest-based advertising works and utilizing your Ad Preferences, you can tailor your ad experience on Facebook to better align with your needs and interests.
